Special Intervention Unit
The origin of this type of special units in western countries dates back to the late 1960s and early 1970s. The event that accelerated the creation of these units was the massacre of the athletes of the Israeli delegation during the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. This historic event made the leaders of the Western world aware of the need to modify the traditional models to deal with the new terrorist methods.
In Spain, it was in 1978 when the Group that would give rise to what is now known as the Special Intervention Unit (U.E.I.) was formed.
Its main missions are:
– Confront and neutralize in situations of hostage-taking and kidnappings where the place of the kidnapped has been located.
– Detention of particularly dangerous criminals, such as members of terrorist organizations or those dedicated to drug trafficking, as well as very aggressive people or in whom especially dangerous circumstances concur.
– The immediate protection of dignitaries or personalities against imminent threat of attack.
– In general, the neutralization of criminal acts that require immediate and highly specialized action that requires it due to its dangerousness and risk.
