Polisario Front leader and president of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (Rasd), Brahim Gali, 73, is hospitalized in Spain “for strictly humanitarian reasons”, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Gali has been admitted to a hospital in Logroño to be treated for covid under an assumed name, other sources specify.
Brahim Gali, leader of the Polisario Front, is admitted to a hospital in Esp. His transfer to Spain would have been negotiated with Algeria and occurs at a time of intensification of hostilities between the Polisario and Morocco, which last November broke a ceasefire of more than three decades. Since then the armed incidents have been repeated.
Earlier this month, the head of the Saharawi National Guard, Adaj el Bendir, was killed in a Moroccan air strike with the support of an Israeli-made drone. Spain doesn’t diplomatically recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), which is part of international organizations such as the African Union, but maintains relations with the Polisario Front and develops cooperation programs in the refugee camps of Tindouf (Algeria).
The Government of Morocco has asked the Spanish Executive for details about the transfer to Spain for “humanitarian reasons” of the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali.
After the official confirmation that Ghali is in Spain, where he is hospitalized to receive treatment for COVID-19, the Moroccan Foreign Ministry asked “to know more details” about it, diplomatic sources have informed Europa Press.
To do this, at the request of the Moroccan Ministry, the Spanish ambassador in Rabat, Ricardo Díez-Hochleitner, has met with a senior official from the department headed by Naser Bourita.
From the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, EU and Cooperation they insist that the meeting has passed within “normality” in diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Already on Friday Spain Foreign Minister, Arancha González Laya, had ruled out that Ghali’s transfer to Spain could strain the relationship with Morocco, at a time when the two governments have yet to close the date of high-level meeting, after postponing it last December.
