The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, met on October 21, 2020, with one of the Taliban leaders in the context of the Pentagon’s statements on the reduction of the number of US troops in Afghanistan.

The talks were held in the Qatari capital Doha, where the Taliban have political representation.

The American foreign policy chief also met with the Emir of Qatar.

In Afghanistan itself, they note a sharp intensification of attacks by the Taliban and ask the White House to postpone the withdrawal of troops.

Pompeo’s visit to the Middle East was also “bolstered” by the first B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers in the region in months.
