Israel launched a spy satellite aimed at monitoring Iran’s activities, considered to be its main enemy.
“The Israeli Defense Ministry and Israeli Defense and Aviation Company Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) successfully launched the ‘Ofek 16’ reconnaissance satellite” at 0400 local time (0100 GMT), the ministry announced in a statement.
Ofek 16, launched with the Shavit rocket, is an “electro-optical satellite with advanced capabilities,” the statement said.
“The successful launch of Ofek 16 overnight is an extraordinary new achievement for the defense industry as a whole and for Israel Aerospace Industries in particular,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz was quoted as saying in the statement.
According to Israeli public radio, the satellite is primarily intended to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities.
