Spirit AeroSystems Belfast has published a render of its Lightweight Affordable Novel Combat Aircraft (LANCA) UAV.
The drone is being developed as part of the MOSQUITO project for the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. Northrop Grumman and Intrepid Minds also take part in the development.
In January of this year, the UK Department of Defense announced a three-year contract for £ 30 million to develop the LANCA project. A full-scale UAV flight test program is expected by the end of 2023.
In addition to flying alongside the current Eurofighter Typhoon and Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighters, it will become an integral part of the Tempest program, a British 6th generation fighter jet currently under development, with many concept UAVs planned. “Faithful follower”.
Three companies with projects of this concept – Boeing, Blue Bear Systems and Spirit AeroSystems – competed in the last phase of the LANCA project. While Spirit AeroSystems won in the UK, Boeing, along with two other companies, Kratos and General Atomics, was selected to further develop a similar Skyborg program run by the US Air Force.
