Ecuadorian Army are reinforcing the border with Colombia, in the province of Carchi, after the murder of two Colombian Police agents. The incident occurred on the afternoon of this Wednesday, February 17, 2021, in the municipality of Cumbal, belonging to the Department of Nariño, Colombia. The town of Cumbal is located three kilometers from the border parish of Tufiño, in the Tulcán canton, in Carchi. According to preliminary data, the victims were indiscriminately attacked by armed men in the village of Nazaret, a rural area of ​​Cumbal, while they were searching people and vehicles. According to the Colombian authorities, columns of the National Liberation Army (ELN) operate in this sector.

After the murder of the two uniformed men, the Colombian Police carried out an operation that allowed the capture of two suspects and the seizure of two rifles, seven pistols and two grenades, which were mobilized aboard a vehicle, which had been stolen minutes before. Pablo Merino, commander of the Andes Brigade, from Ecuador, explained that personnel were mobilized to the international limit to prevent armed persons from trying to cross into national territory. He also pointed out that the Ecuadorian military detachments on the border are on alert, after the armed attack, of which they were informed by the commander of the Cabal Group, of the Colombian Army, with whom they coordinate actions on the international border.
